Tokyo
The United States Army Air Forces led a series of firebombing raids on Tokyo during World War II. The first attack was the Doolittle Raid on April 18th, 1942. The raid was in retaliation for Pearl Harbor. The US continued their attacks by using 279 B-29s to drop about 1500 tons of bombs on Tokyo which destroyed 16 square miles of the city, of small industrial sections, and of residential neighborhoods. It is estimated that between 88,000-200,000 civilians died and one million people lost their homes and were displaced.
